Birth Injuries: Brachial Plexus Injuries
If you were told that your newborn has a brachial plexus injury, it means that the baby’s shoulder was injured during labor and delivery. Specifically, the nerves in the shoulder become stretched or torn, usually when the shoulder is caught on the mother’s pelvic bone. In this type of birth injury, damage to the nerves causes partial or complete paralysis of the arm.
Brachial plexus injuries are sometimes caused by negligent actions by medical providers, including physicians, nurses, midwives and anesthetists.
Although some babies recover, others have permanent damage. Treatment such as nerve grafting or tendon transfers may be required if the nerves were torn (avulsion). However, children whose arm function has not returned after one year will probably have residual damage and loss of function and may need ongoing physical therapy to maximize their strength.
