Prime motorcycle riding season is right around the corner in Ohio.
While you’re preparing your bike for the spring and summer season, it’s a good time to review some motorcycle safety tips:

Although motorists should pay attention to their surroundings while driving, motorcyclists can take measures themselves to make it easier to be seen. Many motorcyclists wear dark clothing. But wearing brighter colors can draw attention and help motorcyclists be seen by other motorists.

Be aware of vehicles that are turning onto the road from a side street. Avoid tailgating. Stay out of vehicles’ blind spots. Vary your speed to ensure that you are seen. Watch for debris in the road. Implement other defensive driving techniques.
- Don’t ride in inclement weather: It may sound obvious, but it is important to avoid riding when it’s raining or very windy. Rain can make it difficult to see, and make roads very slippery. A sudden gust of wind can a motorcyclist to lose control.
- Maintain your bike: Make sure your motorcycle is in excellent riding condition. Check lights and signals to ensure they are working properly. Make sure tires are properly inflated. Consider taking your bike to a shop for a tune-up.
- Wear a helmet: According to the CDC, an estimated 1,772 lives were saved in 2015 because of helmet use. Helmet use is a simple yet effective way to help prevent serious injuries and death if a motorcycle accident does occur.
