Everything Earned Athletic Award – Max S. Hayes High School
Congratulations to the Max S. Hayes High School Swim Team!
Elk & Elk is excited to announce our February 2016 Everything Earned Athletic Award winner. The swim team at Max S. Hayes High School recently received $1,000 to benefit their program.
Elk & Elk’s Everything Earned Athletic Award was created to recognize the achievements of local high school sports teams who go above and beyond. Those who receive the award are successful in the classroom, involved in the community and excel in their athletic competitions.
The swim team at Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s Max S. Hayes High School is no exception.
“I was putting trophies into the new trophy case and I saw all of these trophies from our swimming team, and I don’t remember us ever celebrating their successes…they’re all great students and I thought they deserved to be recognized,” said Athletic Director Todd LeVeck, who nominated the team for the award.
The Lakers recently won the Senate Athletic League Championship, but the team’s success is not limited to the pool. According to head coach Katherine Pfister, who teaches Spanish at Max S. Hayes, one of the varsity starters is the school’s valedictorian and several other students are in her Advanced Placement Spanish class.
Senate Athletic League Athletic Coordinator Chris Callender spoke very highly of the team.
“They come out every week and they work hard. They don’t have a pool at their facility so they have to go to a city rec to practice, and they still come out and compete at the highest level,” said Callender.
“We’re very proud of you, you earned every cent of it…and hopefully with this little bit of help you’ll go even further next year,” Elk & Elk Partner Jay Kelley told the team as he presented them with the award.
Max S. Hayes High School is the most well-known of CMSD‘s Academies of Cleveland career-tech schools. Students have the opportunity to explore programs including automobile technology, computer-aided design and software development. The school moved to its new location near West 65th Street and Clark Avenue at the start of the 2015-2016 school year.
