Don’t Crowd the Plows! ODOT Snowplow Crashes Are Doubling

As winter continues, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) faces a concerning increase in snowplow-related crashes. With 34 incidents already reported this season, surpassing last year by 12, ODOT urges drivers to exercise greater caution on Ohio’s roadways.

Safety Tips While Driving Around Snowplows

How to Drive Safely Around Snowplows

  • Stay Attentive: Focus on the road, especially when snowplows are active! Avoid distractions and prioritize safe driving habits.
  • Allow Extra Travel Time: Plan ahead and allow for additional travel time, considering winter weather conditions.
  • Maintain a Safe Distance: Stay several hundred feet behind snowplows to give them the space they need to clear the roads effectively!

Cuyahoga County has reported the highest number of crashes involving snowplows, but such incidents occur across the entire state. These accidents often happen during lighter snowfalls when drivers may underestimate road hazards. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) warns that these large vehicles, which can weigh up to 60,000 pounds, require plenty of space and good visibility to operate safely.

The frequency of these crashes highlights the importance of ODOT’s safety message: “Don’t crowd the plow.” By remaining vigilant and following these guidelines, drivers can help ensure safer roads for everyone during the winter season. Stay safe!
