Battery Fires in Electric Cars

Automotive News – General Motors, Ford, Hyundai and BMW have had several electric car fires in the past week. Approximately 171,500 electric vehicle (EV) fires took place annually in the US over a recent three-year period, indicating a reflection of plug-in models taking off in the market and a threat to more widespread adoption. Automakers are preparing to debut nearly 100 EVs in the U.S. market through 2024. BMW and Hyundai are recalling tens of thousands of cars, and GM is being probed by U.S. safety regulators.

FDA Revises Guidance on Premium Cigars

CSP Magazine – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has revised its deeming guidance for tobacco products. The action reflects recent court decisions on premium cigars and warning and labeling requirements for cigars and pipe tobacco. In August, the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia prohibited FDA enforcement of the Tobacco Control Act’s premarket authorization requirement for premium cigars until after the agency considers developing a streamlined substantial equivalence process specifically for those products. Additionally, last month the court vacated health warning requirements for cigars and pipe tobacco, remanding the issue back to the FDA so it can more closely consider whether the health warnings would likely affect the number of cigars and pipe tobacco users.

Pet Food Company Receives Warning

Food Safety News – A pet food company in Oregon – Raw Advantage Processing LLC – is on notice from the FDA after inspectors found Listeria monocytogenes in the manufacturing facility. After two inspections at the manufacturing facility in August, the agency determined the company had significant violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice, Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Food for Animals regulation.
