Why are motorcycle crashes so dangerous?

When it comes to traffic collisions, any type of vehicle can be dangerous. In fact, traffic accidents can be difficult for those who are not riding in any vehicle at all (pedestrians), as well as bicyclists and people riding skateboards. However, motorcyclists face an especially high chance of sustaining a serious injury or passing away in a traffic collision and it is important to understand why riding motorcycles can be risky. Drawing attention to the risks motorcyclists face should not only encourage motorcyclists to ride safely, but drivers to pay especially close attention to the road and watch out for those on motorcycles.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcycle wrecks are particularly dangerous (when compared to trucks and passenger vehicles) because of vehicle differences. Motorcycles do not have airbags, seat belts and other safety features that automobiles have. Moreover, motorcycles weigh less and are less bulky, which can be extremely disastrous when two vehicles collide (especially when a motorcycle collides with a much larger vehicle). On top of these issues, automobiles that have four wheels are more stable.

There are some advantages to riding a motorcycle when it comes to safety. For example, a motorcyclist may be able to come to a stop quicker and maneuver through traffic easier. Unfortunately, many reckless drivers endanger the lives of motorcyclists and everyone else on the road because of their carelessness. If you are ever hit by a negligent driver while riding your motorcycle, consider your legal options as you attempt to recover.
